I have a chinchilla and his penis seems to be hanging out and not going back in. I’ve noticed it’s been like this for about 2 weeks. I don’t know what it is and I’m worried about him. What could it be?

Thanks for reaching out about Chi-Chi. This condition seems to have gone on for a long time. Sometimes chinchilla acquire hair rings around the shaft of the penis that constricts and prevents retraction. Trying to extend the penis and checking/removing the hair ring might help. Although, this chinchilla probably needs to see a veterinarian sooner than later, especially if no hair ring is found. Paraphymosis (extended penis) can also be caused by trauma, neurologic problems, urinary disease and other problems. A veterinary visit is needed to diagnose and treat these problems. Good luck.
