My dog has painful sores and hair loss after flea treatment. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 10 months old

I have a German shepherd/ blood hound mix and we noticed about 2 weeks ago that she had fleas so we have her a bath and some treatments. However on the back of her neck and top of her head there are sores and hairless spots. We have used a flea comb thinking that it may be a nest but every time we try to work with her she yells and try’s to run away. We have used coconut oil and tried many different things. Nothing is working. I would show you pictures but she won’t even let me touch it.

Hair loss is possible with fleas, but could also be caused by bacterial infection, fungal infection/ringworm, demodectic mange/mites, among other things. She may be fearful but she could also be painful. I would recommend that you have Maggie evaluated by a vet. They may need to give her mild sedatives so she isn't anxious while at the clinic and so that she can have a complete exam. Once the source of the hair loss and itching is uncovered, then an appropriate treatment can be selected.
