My dog ate a wild rabbit part. Is it dangerous? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shar Pei | Male | neutered | 4 months and 11 days old | 70 lbs

My dog got ahold of a rabbit's leg. I got it out of his mouth but I don't know if he swallowed any of it. He found another bone when I let him outside again but I got it out of his mouth right away. I tried washing out his mouth by pouring a lot of water in his mouth.

This may not be a problem. However I would monitor Blue for lethargy or general signs of illness within the next two to three weeks. If you think your dog is "off", take him to your veterinarian for an exam Rabbits can carry tularemia or fleas that carry the plague. A fever would be the first sign. Make sure you tell the vet about the rabbit leg should your dog get sick.
