My dog's neuter incision is swollen and draining. Will it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog got neutered 7 days ago. He was very swollen and didn't seem interested in anything. He just lays around. Yesterday we noticed his leg overly swollen and felt like a stress ball. And a huge red bump next to his "area" this morning we noticed the red bump had a slash in it and was draining fluid so we took him in. They cut the slash opened more and gave us antibiotics and pain pills. The hole is about a size of a quarter and you can literally see inside my dogs leg. Will it heal?

Hello, thank you for your question about your dog. Based on what you've described it sounds like he may have an infection secondary to his recent surgery, this is not uncommon. Typically, these infections due heal on their own with antibiotics, pain medication, and exercise restriction. The hole is actually a good thing as right now it is allowing the infected fluid to drain. It the hole does not heal or your dog continues to be lethargic or clinically ill I would definitely recommend having him rechecked by your veterinarian. They may need to flush out this area and help it close with additional stitches. Hope this helps, good luck!
