My cat is lethargic and not eating a week after spay. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

My cat has been acting off today. She got spayed a week ago and was fine, but now today she is sleeping all day, will watch toys but won’t play with them (very unusual), and isn’t eating a lot. She has also been kneading a bit which she doesn’t usually do and just wants to sleep. She has clear eyes and normal gums. She purrs anytime I get near her, which isn’t too out of the ordinary. Should I be worried?? I want to take her to the vet but am low on money.

All the behaviors you're describing sound normal and relaxed, even though they are a bit different than her. Going to the vet for an exam wouldn't be wrong, but since you're tight on funds anyways, and none of that sounds concerning to me, I think it's ok to wait and watch her. If she seems to be getting MORE subdued, or has a decreased appetite, a distended abdomen, or doesn't want you to touch her belly (if she'd normally allow this), then I would be concerned.

Mittens may not be feeling well. From your post, I'm not reading any other concerning signs, so I'd just keep an eye on her for now. If she is still acting this way in the morning, I'd take her into a vet for a health check. Best of luck.
