Why does my old dog sound like he's choking or throwing up at night?

My dog has woke me up the past couple night to what sounds like he’s throwing up. It is so dramatic and he does nothing. Scares the crap out of me. He has thrown up before and it has never sounded like this. It sounds almost like he’s choking. Any thoughts? Pet's info: Dog | Bluetick Coonhound | Male | neutered | 10 years old | 86 lbs

Since your dog is an old dog this could be a sign of fluid in his lungs which in turn could signal a lung or heart condition or worse, a lung tumor. Usually dogs with a congestive heart condition cough while resting. I suggest you schedule an exam with your veterinarian. Fluid in the lungs can easily be treated and the heart can be supported with medication that will make it more effective.
