Dog dental cleaning: Is new bloodwork needed? How long does it take?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 4 lbs

I plan on getting scheduling Precious for a dental cleaning procedure. However, in April she was spayed & had bloodwork done then. Would she have to get it redone? Nothing has changed as far as I can see. Also, how long does a dental cleaning take?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Performing bloodwork would be at the discretion of the veterinarian seeing her. For a 9 year old dog (as noted in her profile), I would personally recommend bloodwork before putting her under anesthesia to make sure that her kidneys and liver are working properly. Usually a dental cleaning only takes about 15-20 minutes if no extractions are needed. Best of luck!

Hello. If she only has a bit of tartar on her back teeth, you can certainly put this off until next year & have the bloodwork & dentistry done in April. Depending on the skill of the person doing the dentistry, Precious should only be under anesthesia for a routine cleaning for about 15-20 minutes. If dental x-rays & any extractions are needed, this might stretch things out to an hour or so. If she is not already on heartworm preventative, do the test & start heartworm preventative, but the bloodwork done earlier this year should still be valid if you go ahead with the dentistry now. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
