My cat's rear is swollen after tapeworm medicine. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 years and 6 months old

My cat had a tape worm, I gave her and two other in/out cats otc praziquantel on Friday. Today her behind is distended. She may have consumed a little more or less of the medicine than she should have. With in/out cats it's hard to monitor the eating. Should I be concerned about the behind?

I wouldn't be too concerned. I would recommend repeating treatment in two weeks just to make sure they do not have tapeworms again. I would also recommend a stool sample at your regular veterinarian to make sure there are no other intestinal parasites. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
