Why is my chihuahua panting so much, even when not scared or hot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 2 months old | 22 lbs

Hi, my chihuahua was just seen by our vet last week. He is eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom normally. He seems to be panting alot. He is normally a very nervous dog and pants when afraid, but not this often. I was wondering if you might know what it could be?

He could be panting because he's in pain, he's hot, or he has a health issue like heart disease. I would put him in a cool and dark place to see if that helps with the panting. If this doesn't help with the panting and/or he starts having trouble breathing, I would take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Panting can be a symptom of pain, anxiety, trouble breathing, excessive steroid administration or a disease like Cushings disease. Since Benji can’t talk and tell you what he is feeling, I recommend to have him checked out by his veterinarian. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
