How to help my older cat stop licking and prevent matted fur?

How do I stop my older cat from licking himself so much he's covered in knots everywhere.

He may be licking himself because he has knots in his fu really need to brush or comb him regularly. Also wipe him down with a moist cloth once a day. Since he is so old, he probably has arthritis and cannot reach to all the places he would like to clean, so there is a possibility he goes through the motions dutifully. Regular combing and brushing and wiping him down will likely reduce the excessive grooming habit. Pain medicine from your vet (discuss this with a feline veterinarian) will also make him happier.
