My senior dog has diarrhea, is weak, and won't eat. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | spayed | 13 years and 11 months old | 5.5 lbs

our 14 year old Chihuahua is quite ill. She had diarrhea for 4 or 5 days. On day 2 we started feeding her chicken and rice. We called our vet on the day 3 and said to start her on Pepto Bismal and yogurt. Yesterday (day 5), her BM was a little better but was very weak and not eating. We are now feeding her Pedialyte. and yogurt with an oral syringe as she won't eat on her own. She's very weak and also has a dark discharge from her mouth - which I suspect is from a gum infection.

It sounds like she needs to be examined and treated by a vet right away. She may be getting dehydrated and need some fluids, either subcutaneously or intravenously. Your vet can also run some blood work and other tests to help determine the cause and evaluated the function of all her organs. It is very concerning that she is not eating and is very weak. I don't think this is something that should be treated at home with OTC medications. If she has a gum infection then she may need an antibiotic to treat the infection. Call your vet or take her to an emergency clinic for treatment. Hope she feels better soon!
