Why is my dog trying to vomit for days but nothing comes up now?

I have a 7 yr old chihuahua acting like he needs to throw up but nothing comes up for 4 days. Other than that he seems fine.I gave him boiled chicken and rice and he is eating and drinking. But I am getting wortied. Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

I'm wondering if your dog actually has a productive cough - coughing can look very similar to attempted vomiting in dogs. It would be unusual for a dog to be trying to vomit but still have an appetite.
