My cat on methimazole has side effects. Are they an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 17 lbs

highly concerning side effects suddenly began 11/22/18, after 2 weeks of methimazole (pill) for hyperthyroidism - lethargy, vomiting, face itching, irritability, hiding all day, less frequent bowel movements, bouts of anxiety. He has NOT refused food or water. vet doesn't open for 24 hours, uncertain about the urgency of the situation -- can this wait 24 hours? How normal are these side effects? Are there other side effects I should look for, that warrant immediate emergency care?

These signs could be consistent with methimazole related side effects. GI upset and facial itching are some of the most common acute side effects in the first few months of therapy. I would recommend stopping the medication until you can talk to your vet about your concerns. Some cats can not take this medication and thus require an alternate method of treatment. If still eating and drinking that is good. If any of the symptoms worsen an ER visit is advised. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
