Why is my senior dog shaking, panting, and hyperventilating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old | 30 lbs

My dog Buster is 10 years old. We cant afford to take him to a vet right now but hes been hyperventalating while shaking pretty bad. Hes not cold, doesnt exhibit signs of being sick since he is still eating. I have concerns that he may have anxiety of some sort because he also startsto pant really bad around a certain area of the house.

Buster may be in pain as shaking and panting is often a sign of pain. Excessive panting is also often a sign of Cushing's disease. I suggest you take Buster to a veterinarian for an exam. Dachshunds are prone to intervertebrate disk disease due to their long back and short legs, and that would be very painful. An x-ray can rule this out. Cushing's disease can be ruled out with a blood test. Please find a way to schedule an appointment with your vet for Buster.
