My dog's ear tips are dry and breaking. What's wrong? How to prevent?

Hi, I have an 11 year old Dacshund purebred. I adopted him almost a year ago with oddly shaped ear tips. Thinking it was injuries from his puppy playing days I didn't think of it again. But recently they have been so dry, and actually a night ago it finally broke and a peice of his ear is now gone (I didn't notice until after it stopped bleeding. ) It doesn't seem to bother him at all but I'm just worried and don't want it to ever happen again. What is wrong and how can I prevent it? Thanks!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely a case of vasculitis. This is sometimes caused by underlying allergy for example. There are medications that can be used to improve circulation to all parts of the ear such as pentoxifylline. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hopefully, they can start him on therapy to make him feel better. Best of luck!
