My senior dog has leg pain and is limping. What can I give him for relief?

My dog has a calyst on his leg and he is pain...he had it for years and he is 16 years old in human years...he is a mountainfice..what can I give him for pain...he has a bad limp lick he can't walk for the last two days

Unfortunately, your choices of OTC medications for pain are limited as most can be toxic or have a very narrow margin of safety. Ideally, you should have your dog examined by your veterinarian. A medication, such as Metacam (meloxicam) or Rimadyl (carprofen), may be dispensed if indicated. For now, restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Alternating warm and cool compresses may also relieve discomfort. Other alternative treatments include acupuncture or cold laser therapy.
