How does food quality impact my GSD's coat color, shine, and health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 30 days old | 4 lbs

i know that the coat quality of a dog can greatly vary depending on the quality of food which is fed. does the color and appearance of coat change with quality too? will the color be brighter and shinier if better quality is fed? will the hair be stronger? specifically asking about GSDs here....

You have the right idea. The coat quality of a dog is heavily dependent on the food it eats. That is that a good quality complete dog food for the breed or size of your breed (in your case puppy food) will make it possible for the hair coat to be at its best. However, puppy coats usually look fluffy, not slick and do not have as nice a shine as an adult coat.In an adult hair coat, a black coat will be blacker, the coat will be very shiny, it will feel not dry and also not greasy, there will be no dandruff.
