Why does my dog wake me up at night but doesn't need to go potty?

Why has my dog started coming into my bedroom to nudge me to get up, most times when I let him out he doesn’t want to toilet, he just has a walk around and then comes in and goes back to bed. This can happen several times a night. Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old
