My dog killed a rat. Will she harm my small pets or a new kitten?

Ok stupid question. My dog killed a rat.Unfortunately I got to witness it and it was horrifying. My question is since she so aggressively killed this rat will she harm other small animals? I have a Chihuahua who rules the house. The rat killer is a lab/pit cross.I was gonna get a kitten(she is fine with cats) but now I'm afraid of her killing a little kitten.Does she instinctively know rats are rats? Or are all small animals potential prey?

Yes, you got it right. They often can't distinguish between kittens and other small preys and will attack and kill the kittens as well. The same can apply to small children, that in their eyes can be considered something not human as they are not fully grown up, make funny sounds and have different smells. This does not apply got every dog, but does apply to dogs like yours that feel the instinct to attack. I would advise against rescuing a kitten or it might end up in a tragedy ! Best wishes
