My kitten's voice is strange, squeaky, or silent. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 6 month old kitten has always had a funny voice. I'm an SLP, so I know a little about voice. It's clear that he has difficulty getting his vocal folds to vibrate in a normal manner - his voice sounds strained, harsh, and either high pitched and squeaky or else he tries to meow and no sound comes out. There has been no change since he's been living with us (3 months). Should I be concerned? By the way, there are no obvious swallowing problems and he's otherwise healthy.

I wouldn't be concerned if this is how he has always sounded. Upper respiratory infections are very common in young kittens and sometimes swelling can affect the vocal folds - it's possible that he had some scar tissue formed. It's also possible that this is how he was born. If he does have trouble swallowing or breathing, or if he regurgitates or vomits you should see your vet.
