My senior dog stiffens and groans in sleep. Are these seizures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 14 years and 1 month old | 11 lbs

About a week ago, my 14 year old dog who’s been sick for a little over a month with a possible inner ear infection or stroke. He was sleeping soundly, then quickly woke up, stumbled a bit, then stiffened where he made a crying groaning sound. My dad picked him up & my dog relaxed right away. This all lasted about 10sec. We called our vet who told us to keep an eye out. Then today, same thing. Sound asleep, stiffened legs, didnt get up, but turned his head, & groaned/whined. Are these seizures?

Yes, it may be seizure related but i would be concerned it may also be due to pain and spasms. I recommend you video the episodes if they happen again and show them to your vet. I would be concerned that this could be progressive
