My senior dog's eyes are red and shut. Can I use colloidal silver?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 15 years old | 24 lbs

My daushaund is 15 yrs old. Occasionally he gets teeth infections. Today he showed all the signs of an infection. I typically use colloidal silver on his infective tooth. When I noticed he couldn't open his eyes. He will not open his eyes. His eyes are red and the membrane is inflamed. What can I use to help him? I've heard you can use colloidal silver in the eyes too. Is this true? This happened suddenly.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do not recommend you use colloidal silver for the eyes. This is potentially something serious such as a severe infection or abscess in the region of the eyes, a tumor, among other possibilities. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible as this is likely causing him pain and making him feel uncomfortable. They would be able to evaluate the eyes and surrounding structures carefully to see what seems to be the root of his issues so that therapy can be recommended accordingly. Best of luck!
