My cat cries when alone upstairs. Could it be separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Tonkinese | Male | neutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

So whenever my cat is alone upstairs, and I'm downstairs, though he is perfectly able to walk down the stairs, he starts to meow a distressed meow until I come get him and bring his down with me. Does he have seperation anxiety?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He may have separation anxiety and that may explain it. I would recommend a product called Feliway which may help with episodes of distress or separation anxiety and is not a medication per se but it helps them feel more at ease. Best of luck!
