Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 5 years and 2 months old | 11 lbs

My dog was throwing up bile for a week I called vet was told to put her on a antacid which I did for a week took her off and within two weeks after taking the medicine she is back to throwing up bile every morning but otherwise shows no sickness plays and eats like always. Should I keep Her on the medicine long term it’s over the counter Pepcid ac? Every time she stops taking it she has bile or what could be causing this issue? Should I be concerned at this point or is this normal? 5 yrs 11 lbs

A complete workup from your vet is best to rule out anything more serious such as food allergies, GI problems, etc that could be underlying and are being masked by the medication if the problems are persisting. In some cases, reflux and vomiting bile can happen if your dog has an empty stomach for too long. Feeding smaller meals more frequently, or feeding a treat right before bed/waking up first thing can help keep enough in the stomach to keep your dog from vomiting. However, I would still let your vet know the vomiting is continuing when off the meds and schedule a vet visit to rule out any issues anyway.

Some dogs are on Pepcid long term, but if you haven't seen your vet for this problem I definitely think you should make an appointment for a physical exam and some tests. Vomiting can be a sign of intestinal obstruction, kidney or pancreatic disease, or inflammatory bowel disease and treating with Pepcid could delay a diagnosis. If your vet has already seen Kiwi for this issue you could also call and see if they think long term Pepcid would be appropriate.
