Is a 1-month-old puppy too young for distemper and parvo vaccines?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 29 days old | 4 lbs

I've heard puppies can be given a vaccine for just distemper and parvovirus at the age of around 1 month. im not talking about main core vaccines here like 8 in 1 or 9 in 1. just distemper and parvo... while most doctors and breeders do not get the puppy vaccined at 1 month but some do and i am taking a dog from them. so is it true or not? what could be the harms of pre-vaccination?

4 weeks is too early and any vaccine given at that age will not be effective as the puppy has maternal antibodies which will fight the vaccine. When the puppy is six weeks old then this vaccination makes more sense as some puppies have lost these maternal antibodies and need a vaccine to protect them especially against parvo. Some still have these maternal antibodies at 6 weeks and therefore will also destroy the vaccine. This is why your puppy will need 4 courses of vaccines from 6 weeks on.
