Dog's swollen eye from trauma: Why is she pawing it after ointment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 75 lbs

After rough playing in the yard my dog came in with a swollen eyeball. I took her right away to the vet who said it was fluid from trauma, but no corneal cuts or foreign bodies and it would resolve itself. She gave me some steroid ointment but that just seems to be causing her to paw at her eye. How long should this take to resolve and should I be concerned? It looks the same today as it did yesterday,

Pawing at the eye is a sign of pain or at least irritation. Not having examined the eye myself, it is not possible to tell you how long this will take to resolve and I suggest you call your veterinarian tomorrow and ask him. You may also want to ask him about pain medicine.
