Why is my grain-free dog constipated, gassy, and vomiting blood?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 11 months old | 97 lbs

My dog eats grain-free dog food, and lately he has had a very hard time going to the bathroom. He puked up a little bit of blood the other day. He has very strong flatulence and all the time. What do I need to change

He needs more fiber in his food. I do not recommend grain free food now since they have found an increase in heart disease in dogs that eat grain free exclusively. The research is ongoing but if he has flatulence and constipation I recommend switching diets. I use Hills food or recommend Nutro Naturals. You can also add plain canned pumpkin to his diet for added fiber but that may not help the gas. Vomiting blood once could be from a bone or stick. If it continues then that is a serious medical problem that needs veterinary care. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your dog.
