My dog chewed his neuter stitches off. Do I need an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 12 lbs

Brady got neutered yesterday, today when I got home from work he had escaped his cone and chewed his stitches off!! Being the day before thanksgiving I know my vet will be closed tomorrow, he is on pain meds and I sprayed the area with doggie hydrocortisone for inflammation and infection. The incesion doesn’t seem to be opened, but I can still see the cut, what do I do?! Freaking out

Given that it is so early after the surgery it would be best for your pet to be seen. Sutures or staples may need to be replaced and possibly oral antibiotics started. Chewing on the incision allows mouth bacteria to enter the wound. This can be dangerous if not addressed. If you call your vets office they should have a way for pets to be seen when they are closed, either a doctor on call or a number for a close er. You could also google a veterinary emergency clinic in your area. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
