My dog has a spot & diarrhea. Can he catch ringworm from my daughter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 10 lbs

Hi. My blue male min pin has a spot that showed up on his back today. It is about the size of a quarter and it is raised. It is flat. He also started having diarrhea today. My daughter has a small spot of (what I think is) ringworm on her back. Could my dog have caught ringworm? Or any thoughts on what it could be?

Hi there! Yes, dogs can get ringworm from humans and vice versa! Other things that can cause lesions on a dogs skin are hives from an allergic reaction, bacterial infection, or even an insect or spider bite. Since your daughter does have ringworm, it would be a good idea for your dog to see his veterinarian. They can perform an exam and evaluate some tests if they believe that it is in fact ringworm. If it is, they can make sure to treat so that the infection doesn't keep getting passed back and forth between the two of them and to other members of the household. As for the diarrhea, I would monitor that. You can always try to fast him for about 12 hours, no food and offer small amounts of water. Then try some boiled or steamed lean protein like chicken or ground turkey and rice with no sauce or seasoning and offer him abotu 1/3 of his normal portion of food. If all is well after that, you can increase the amount of food per meal by increments of 1/3 until he's eating his full serving of food. If the diarrhea persists, it's best to see his veterinarian. Small breed dogs can develop a condition called, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, and it can cause these dogs to become very ill. Diarrhea is often caused by dietary indiscretion (pets eating things they shouldn't) but can also be caused by parasites (some of which can be passed to humans) as well as infections, metabolic diseases, or even foreign objects being ingested. Therefore, it's best to get the diarrhea checked if it doesn't resolve. I hope you find this answer helpful! Best of luck!
