My cat is not loving after trauma. How can I build trust and bond?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 21 days old | 25 lbs

Jace is 3 months old and not very loving. At 2 months old my son tossed him in the air "playing" With him and we think it tramatized him. I try showing him love but he hates being picked up and gets tense when you do. He won't let you hold or pet him unless he goes to you. We couldn't let him be adopted like that so we kept him. His mom is very loving to him so are his older siblings. What can I do to make him more loving? He is our cat now, I just want him to be loving like his siblings.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jace. It does sound like he is afraid from being thrown in the air. The incident likely occurred during the fear period of his development where negative experiences have longer lasting effects. You will need to work hard to rebuild his trust in people. I would not pick him up or handle him if it causes him stress. All interactions will need to be initiated by him. You can find a treat that he likes to reward him for seeking our human affection. It will take a fair amount of time though for him to become more confident. I hope this information helps!
