My Dachshund has one long vertebrae. What is it called and its causes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 15 lbs

So I just took my Dachshund to the vet and they said instead of multiple bones in the vertebrae he just has one long vertebrae.. what would that be called and what are the causes?

Congenital vertebral malformations are quite common in dogs. In order to give you a more exact description I would need to see the x-rays. The cause is usually a problem when the spinal cord was developing in the fetus. Your dog was born with it. Depending on the malformation there may be absolutely no problems, or your dog may get or have pinched nerves, trouble walking, trouble defecating or urinating and other neurological deficits. Treatment, if possible would be symptomatic or surgery depending on the problem.
