My cat's cheek is swollen after a fight. Is it an abscess if the wound healed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 4 months old | 9.7 lbs

A week ago my cat had a fight with some other and received 2 scratches,1 on forehead and other on cheek. The injured area got swollen and 3 days ago the lump on her forehead bursted. Abscess and other discharge start ooz out of it that I cleaned thoroughly and applied medicine on. But now the other swelling on her cheek is not reducing and even the wound on it have healed. If there's abscess inside,it have got no passage to come out. Kindly advice what should I do now. Thanking you in advance

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. She will need to see her veterinarian to have the swelling evaluated. It is likely another abscess. She will need to have it lanced to allow the infection to drain out. She will need oral antibiotics as well. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jumbo. If the cheek is still swollen, I worry that it is infected. An abscess is a common consequence of cat fights. If an infection goes untreated, it can make things worse. For example, near by tissues can be destroyed. It is good that he is still eating, but this can change. If a cat stops eating, he is at risk for a very serious liver disease. I really do recommend that he sees his veterinarian as he will likely need antibiotics again. In the meantime, place warm compresses (a warm washcloth) on the swollen cheek. This can help. I hope this information helps!
