My dog won't eat after my trip, but acts normal. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 9.4 lbs

Hi, I went on a trip for a week and left my 1 1/2 year old chihuahua with my mom. My mom stayed at my place so there wasn’t a change in environment. I noticed that she didn’t eat her supper last night and only ate maybe half of breakfast today. She is still acting the same, still drinking, bowel and bladder activity are normal, she’s still crazy for treats, and no change to her food that recently. I’ve left her with family before and her eating habits never changed. I’m not sure what to do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. As long as she is otherwise acting normal, it should be fine to monitor her for another 24-48 hours. If her appetite does not improve or she displays other signs of illness, then she will need to see her veterinarian. Hopefully she was just stressed by your absence, but you will need to ensure there is not an underlying medical condition. I hope this information helps!
