My older dog has nail-like skin growths that fall off and regrow?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Male | unneutered | 9 years old

Good day Can anyone perhaps tell me what this is? My dog has quite a few of them. He's a Yorkshire Terrier and actually turned 9 years old today. I've noticed that one fell off and started growing back again.

These are benign but abnormal proliferation of the most superficial layer of the skin which creates structures similar to ''nails'' or any keratinized organ (horns, nails for example). Microscopically this material is a mix of cellular debris. It is usually nothing to be worried about as they come with old age.
