My dog growls when I make a cat purring sound. Is he confused?

Sometimes I roll my tongue softly to make a cat purring noise and every time I do it my dog growls back at me. Am I saying something to him or does he just not like the cat sound? Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 23 lbs

You are probably confusing him as this would not be the normal noises humans make. He may also mistake that noise for growling, so may perceive it as a threat. So I would not "purr" at him as you never know and he may jump into your face some day thinking you are threatening him.
