My senior dog has pancreatitis. Should we operate or let her go?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 14 years and 4 months old | 7 lbs

My dog is 14.5 years old and blind. She has been having slight bleeding from the eyes. Yesterday she had pancreas inflammation and was in great pain. Our local vet suggests for her to operate. Not sure if this is the best course of action as she might not survive and there are likely side effects even if she does. Wife suggests to let her go instead and end her suffering. What would you suggest?

I think it depends on how stable she is, what her overall quality of life is aside from this sudden new issue. (Here is some helpful information about quality of life: https://www.lapoflove.com/Quality-of-Life ). It also depends on her prognosis after surgery, which your vet can help you determine. I think surgery and euthanasia are both reasonable in this situation, but the can't tell you which would be better from your description. I hope that helps and I'm sorry your family is going through this.
