Why can I feel my cat's shoulder blades near its neck? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

I’ve just noticed I can feel the bones at the base of my cat’s neck right as his back starts. Are they his shoulderblades? Is that normal? None of his other bones protrude like that and I just noticed in the last couple of weeks. You can’t tell by sight just by feel.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Those are indeed likely the shoulder blades though it is hard to know without being able to feel them myself. You can normally feel them but should not be seen easily so you should be good. Good luck!
