Why are my cat's paws dark and scabby? Is it fungus or contagious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old

My cat has damaged looking paws. Around the edges of each pillow it is dark and scabby looking. Is it likely to be a fungus or just damage done to them? It's been this way for about 3 weeks. There does seem to be some improvement. If it is fungus can humans catch it by coming into contact with it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to an infection such as one caused by a fungus though it could be bacterial and it is just not possible to know just based on a description. Usually these infections are not transmitted to humans unless it is ringworm and it does not sound like that so I would not be too concerned about that. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!
