Is it normal for a weak newborn puppy to die shortly after birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | unspayed

My pug had pups on Friday morning ( 4 in total ) they were all roughly the same size. Since then though 3 of them appear to have been putting on a lot more weight and one just wanted to sleep. I tried attaching it to mum a few times and it did feed when I did this and had been seen a few times doing this itself. I have however woken up and this one has sadly died sometime in the early hours of the morning. My question is, is this normal

Unfortunately it is very common for small, weak pups to pass away. Often this can be due to internal birth defects and nothing can be done other than to try and regularly encourage feeding as you did
