Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 16 days old | 4 lbs
Eevee has been having problems using the litter box this week. She seems to pee on her foot and then it gets coated in litter, so she is running around the house scattering litter. Aside from clearing out the old waste from all the boxes (I have been cleaning them 2x daily in case it was too much clutter but that is not what the problem is I guess), what could help her with her peeing issue? We do plan to spay her after the holidays as money is currently tight, which may help, we know.

Hello, thank you for your question about Eevee. Since Eevee is still young it is possible that she is still learning how to use the litterbox effectively without creating a mess. However, this could also be a sign of an underlying problem. If she is having small frequent urinations or urinations in an abnormal place it is possible that she may have a UTI. If possible I would recommend having her seen by her veterinarian to rule out that there is an underlying problem. One other thing to try would be switching the type of litter that is used. There are litters that are made with substances other than clay - some out of paper or pellets. These may prevent Eevvee from making such a mess in the house. Hope this helps, good luck!

If this is a new problem I recommend having a urinalysis checked. She may be having a urinary issue that needs treatment. Often with feline lower urinary tract disease the cats have inflammation and pain when they urinate. That may be causing her to move before she’s finished. The veterinarian may recommend pain medication and perhaps a change in diet. In the meantime I would start her on a urinary health diet or wet food only. That will help reduce the crystals if any in the urine. I also recommend the supplement Cosequin granules for cats. That will reduce the bladder inflammation and should help this problem. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Eevee.
