My dog's nail fell off, bleeding stopped. Does she need an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Brittany | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 23 days old | 20 lbs

Hello, my dogs nail fell off, bled for a little bit but bleeding has stopped. Closest vet is a hours drive through the snow today. She’s not in much pain maybe a little tender at times. Does this require a emergency vet trip? She seems fine other than her nail is missing

Poor Tandy! If the bleeding has stopped, then an emergency visit isn't need. I would gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep her from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on her. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can clean it with hydrogen peroxide but she ultimately may need the nail cut back. If the skin remains swollen, red, infected or if she keeps licking it or limping she should be seen by your Veterinarian to have the nail evaluated. Good luck
