Why does my puppy poop when nervous meeting new dogs outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Spanish Water Dog | Male | neutered | 6 months and 29 days old | 42 lbs

My puppy is pretty much adherent to his schedule of pooping, which is about 20-30 minutes after his meal. But I have noticed for about 3 times now, whenever he gets nervous about new experiences outside of our house, he would poop even if he has not been fed yet. This normally involves meeting new dogs. He is shy but he is also curious. All incidents we've had are all out on walks, but I'm dreading the idea of having an incident inside the house of one of our friends who also have dogs.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are daily variations in the defecation routine so this is not necessarily abnormal. I would not be too concerned about this as you will most likely not run into this issue. Have a great day!
