My dog is scratching after NexGard. Is it working or a bad sign?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 3.307 lbs

Is NexGard really bad for dogs? What should we do in case he shows bad symptoms? We gave Voldemort one yesterday. After about 12 hours, the ticks were on the tiled floor, they looked like beans. We were thinking it was so effective. His body was covered with ticks (was difficult to see due to the fur), they were everywhere around the house too. We were happy that when we patted him up, the bumps greatly lessened. He's active as ever, but he still scratched. Eats well too. Been 31 hrs since then

He will still scratch, as the ticks injected an anesthetic into the skin and he may be reacting to that. I would not worry about this at the moment, as this will go away within a few days. Since you are finding a lot of dead or fallen off ticks, The Nexguard is obviously working. It takes a few days to kill off the ticks. Sometimes they just dry out while hanging on and then they will eventually fall off.

Hi there. Nexgard is a very effective medication for ticks, but the tick will bite and remain attached for several hours before it absorbs enough of the medication to kill it. So you may still find unattached ticks crawling on your dog, small attached ticks that are still alive, or attached ticks that are already dead. This is normal.
