My IBD cat is vomiting, has diarrhea, and won't eat. Is she okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 13 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

Cat with IBD for several years treated with depo medrol shots is lately experiencing more liquid, golden diarrhea. When she drinks water, she can’t seem to keep it down. She’s eating less and less and vomits that too 3-4 times a week. Is she in pain; am I losing her. My vet is on vacation.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This probably just means that her IBD is no longer being controlled on the current medications and she just needs further management of her condition. I highly recommend that you have reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. At the very least they can make sure to treat her symptoms so that you can get her to feel better. They can also add medications to try to get her condition under control again. Good luck!

Hello, Sorry to hear that Bugger is struggling with diarrhea and loss of appetite. He may need a dose adjustment of his Prednisolone. He may also need a diet change, probiotics, or an additional medication to help with his bowel function. He may also have a new and different problem causing this, such as kidney disease. I'd recommend a recheck with his regular veterinarian. They can best guide you on diagnostics and treatment after his physical.

Without knowing what you have used, Sammys full history and current condition this is very difficult to discuss. The cornerstones of treatment generally revolve around: specialist hydrolysed diet (royal canin analergenic / hills z/d ultra), immunosuppressive medications, injectable and oral vitamin b12/folic acid supplements and natural antiinflammatory supplements. Please repost or request a consultation if yo have further questions about his condition

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she has been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and her diet is not keeping the condition under control anymore, your veterinarian could consider immunosuppressive therapy starting with prednisone for example if her medical history allows. That alone can help quite a lot in these cases. They could also consider an appetite stimulant such as Entyce to help in the meantime. Good luck!
