Dog has glaucoma after dental surgery. How can I help him at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | 8 years and 3 months old | 14 lbs

Hi, my dog had 20 teeth removed on Monday, 2 days later we noticed one eye was draining & looked blurry, 4 days later he was unable to open his eyes,5 day we took him back to vet, states he developed glaucoma & not from surgery, put him on meds to reduced pressure & antibiotics. What else could we do at home to help him? He is not himself, just sleeping, not eating, does not want to be bothered. Could this of been caused from having teeth removed, will he be ok?

I can't readily think of a link between glaucoma and a dental surgery. Sometimes dental disease or surgery can cause either pressure or an infection underneath/behind the eye, but this would not be the same as glaucoma. If the medications don't seem to be helping him you could always ask about referral to an ophthalmologist who might be able to adjust medications or even talk about other procedures to help reduce the pressure in the eye. Sometimes medical management of glaucoma with drops just doesn't work and occasionally removing the eye is actually the best option since the eye is usually not visual and is a source of chronic pain. I'm so sorry this happened to Sammy and I hope he is feeling better soon.
