My dog was hit by a car, has swollen neck & pain. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Black Mouth Cur | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 45 lbs

My dog was ran into by a car, has a few cuts one large one on top of right shoulder, got bleeding stopped. He will stand and hobble around but Yelps when starts to stand. What really concerns me is he has this large swollen area in his neck on same side that feels like fluid inside it. He is eating treats and drinking water and is alert. There is no vet open near me right now. Please help any advice is appreciated.

BB could have a hematoma or accumulation of blood and fluid secondary to the trauma on his neck. I would be worried that he is painful when standing - while it is possible that this is from bruising and soft tissue trauma a broken bone would be another possibility. I would not recommend anything else specific if you are absolutely unable to see a vet right now - just keep him as quiet/calm as possible and continue to offer food and water. You may need to help him stand up - sometimes slinging a towel underneath to assist might help. I do not recommend any over the counter pain medications in dogs. If he stops eating, is having trouble breathing, seems very weak or lethargic, or is unable to walk I would recommend driving to the nearest veterinarian.
