Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 6 years old | 18 lbs

My shih tzu has what I believe is an abscess on her back. it drained and scabbed over but started to drain again. How can I treat this? What could have caused it? She's never had anything like this and is very healthy.

Any kind of puncture wound can cause an abscess. Most abscessed have to be treated at the very least with oral antibiotics prescribed by your veterinarian, or else the infection will stay underneath the skin. I would recommend visiting your vet within the next day or two at the most to get this treated appropriately . I hope that your fur baby Sessy gets this abscess resolved soon! Best wishes and take care.
