Why is my senior cat losing weight, not eating, and acting depressed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 9 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

Hi, I have a 9 year female tortoiseshell tabby cat named Chloe. She's my baby and only seems to want me as her human. Well, the past couple of months I've been away and haven't been able to come home until the weekends. And lately we've noticed she's losing weight. She's very skinny and doesn't seem to want to eat or move. And when I'm home she never wants me to leave her (she's started following me everywhere even with the dogs around which is she is terrified of). I'm hoping its depression.

Chloe is gorgeous! I highly recommend taking her to a veterinarian to have evaluated. We want to make sure there is nothing medical going on with her before stating it is stress from you not being around. If she is healthy then I would potentially discuss medication for her to help her in these stressful situations. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
