My chinchilla is afraid. How can I build trust and bond with him?

Hello! I have a chinchilla who is less than a year old, and when I first got him I treated him badly: force holding him for a long time, chasing him around the room to catch him, etc. Now I realize I shouldn't have done that and now whenever I move he scurries to his cage or under something. I want a good relationship with him and I want him to be comfortable with coming on my lap and things like that. Thanks and have a great day!

Thanks for reaching out about Charlie. Stop by slow, calm motions to decrease fright. Offer treats by hand, if you are able to approach him. If not, leave where he can gather them. If he warms up to you, allow him to jump over you, pet him gently, and don't try to force the relationship. Give it time. Good luck.
