My dog randomly yelps, lifts paw, then acts normal. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 11 months and 5 days old | 80 lbs

11 month old dog randomly screams and yelps and holds up his front lift paw and then after a few minutes is normal and acts like nothing ever happened, this occurs a couple times a day randomly whether he’s playing or just standing. Initially noticed when he was playing with a dog at the dog park. He was running around doing 360 spins and jumping and randomly started crying. But then went back to playing. No swelling or pain to the touch. Walks plays and runs normally. Shepherd/husky mix.

It sounds like Denver is in pain. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck.
